The European Union (EU) has earmarked €24.4 million to fight against the proliferation and illicit circulation of small arms and light weapons in Nigeria and other West African countries.
The Head of the European Union Delegation to ECOWAS, Enobong Moma, revealed this during a roundtable discussion on Small Arms and Light Weapons Control in Nigeria held on Thursday in Abuja.
She noted that reducing the availability of small arms and light weapons would help curb organised crime in the region.
According to her, illicit weapons, which are now even more readily available, pose a threat to electoral processes, weaken police authority, foster sexual violence, and undermine security efforts aimed at maintaining peace.
